LSHW is a Welsh government-funded organisation that aims to propel inspiring life science innovations into frontline use in health and social care in Wales. To this end, LSHW operates as a forum for collaborative discussion around the use of new ideas to manage, avert and prevent poor health. Its work involves industry, health and social care organisations and academic institutions across the country.
The LSHW AI Special Interest Group invited Faculty to present how we implemented our decision intelligence platform, Frontier, with Hywel Dda Health Board. Staff from Hywel Dda joined us to discuss how implementing Frontier forms a key part of their wider QI-driven patient flow improvement programme. One that aims to address key barriers to optimising discharge planning.
Our work with Hywel Dda and LSHW was featured in the Spring 2024 edition of Breakthrough Magazine. In this issue, CEO of LSHW, Cari-Anne Quinn, discussed groundbreaking technological advances that will have the greatest impact on the country’s health and innovation landscape. In particular, Quinn named Frontier as one of the disruptive technologies that will help NHS Wales tackle one of its greatest challenges: bed-blocking.
“We hear a great deal in the media around ‘bed-blocking’, where patients are physically able to go home, but can’t because of issues around support services, which understandably is very emotional and upsetting for everyone involved.”
Cari-Anne Quinn, CEO of LSHW
Quinn goes on to discuss how Frontier provides an AI-generated estimated date of discharge (EDD) for patients on admission which, “alongside a programme of change management work across the health board, facilitates proactive planning for patients’ release from the hospital.”
After discussing the significant collaboration between Faculty and Hywel Dda to implement Frontier and support teams on the ground to utilise the solution as part of their daily workflows, Quinn identifies “tangible benefits” in the way the local health network is running, as well as opportunities for other organisations across Wales to implement the solution.
