Meet some of the team
Before joining Faculty, Tom was a Senior Civil Servant with wide experience across Government policy and economist roles. At Faculty, Tom has led data science and AI programmes with the National Crime Agency, the Home Office, DCMS, BEIS, the Maritime Coastguard Agency, Cabinet Office, the ASA and GDS, among several others.
He has 10 years experience in Government, including as Head of Strategy at the Department for Education and Senior Adviser on Economics Affairs and Technology to Prime Minister David Cameron. He holds a first class degree in Economics from the University of Cambridge and a postgraduate diploma in Economics from Birkbeck, University of London.
Nijma is a client-centric, dynamic leader with a proven track record of delivering significant impact at the intersection of technology and public good, blending expertise in the use of AI/ML to deliver public value, social impact and sustainability.
Nijma leads Faculty’s work across Law Enforcement and oversees the delivery of client projects across data science, engineering and design. She is responsible for key partnerships with the National Crime Agency (NCA) and the Home Office, delivering a portfolio of projects focusing on making society safer.
Tom Drew OBE
Head of National Security
Tom Drew is Faculty’s Customer Director for National Security and Counter-Terrorism. He manages a portfolio of work centred on the development and deployment of AI to support the delivery of national security strategic effect.
Before joining Faculty, Tom worked in Homeland Security Group (HSG) in the Home Office, where he built a team responsible for analysing online terrorist and extremist communications and behaviours. During his time at HSG, Tom’s work was critical in shaping the Government’s understanding of violent extremist organisations and its response to acts of terrorism in the UK and abroad. His work has resulted in the removal of thousands of pieces of harmful and illegal material from the internet.
Tom was awarded an OBE in the 2020 Queen’s Birthday Honours for his work for national security.
Andrew van der Lem
Customer Director, Government
Andrew is a Customer Director at Faculty. He has a background as a senior civil servant with roles in the Department of Business, Innovation and Skills, Cabinet Office, and Foreign Office. He is experienced in a wide range of public policy areas including: strategy, economics, communications, procurement and government grant programmes.
Andrew was one of the founder directors of the British Business Bank and most recently a director in the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority. Andrew is also a former trustee director of a large pension fund and non-executive director of the Government-owned Radioactive Waste Management.
Technical Principal for Defence and Security
Alena has 10 years experience in the application of Data Science to problems in the Defence and Security sectors, using her technical and domain knowledge to bridge the gap between cutting-edge technology and pragmatic application. She has worked extensively alongside government customers including Dstl, StratCom and the Home Office, understanding their problems and advising them on their use of Machine Learning.
Before joining Faculty, Alena ran the Applied Research Centre for Defence and Security at the Alan Turing Institute. Prior to her work at Turing, she led the Machine Learning capability area at Roke, spearheading their National Security Data Science campaign and orchestrating their contribution to the SECTORED framework.
