Director of Government
Before joining Faculty, Tom was a Senior Civil Servant with wide experience across Government policy and economist roles. At Faculty, Tom has led data science and AI programmes with the National Crime Agency, the Home Office, DCMS, BEIS, the Maritime Coastguard Agency, Cabinet Office, the ASA and GDS, among several others.
He has 10 years experience in Government, including as Head of Strategy at the Department for Education and Senior Adviser on Economics Affairs and Technology to Prime Minister David Cameron. He holds a first class degree in Economics from the University of Cambridge and a postgraduate diploma in Economics from Birkbeck, University of London.
Nijma is an experienced strategy director with deep, practical experience at the intersection of technology and public good. She has helped Government departments, blue-chip corporates and NGOs build new strategies that address environmental and societal challenges and is now using that expertise to drive adoption of AI for societal good.
Nijma leads Faculty’s work across Law Enforcement and oversees the delivery of client projects across data science, engineering and design. She is responsible for key partnerships with the National Crime Agency (NCA) and Home Office, delivering a portfolio of projects with a specific focus on using AI to support public safety.
Tom Drew OBE
Head of Counter Terrorism
Tom is a global expert in the design and development of innovative counter-terrorism technologies and online harms strategies for Government, Law Enforcement and the public sector.
During his career, Tom has been responsible for the creation and implementation of a range of automated tools that have expedited the detection and removal of hundreds of thousands of pieces of harmful and illegal online material and the disruption of dangerous online terrorist networks. In 2020 Tom was awarded an OBE for services to national security.
Engagement Manager, Government
Prior to joining Faculty, David worked as a Senior Strategy Advisor in the Department for Education, leading projects across the education and skills system. David’s six years of Government experience include roles in the Home Office and Ministry of Justice. He holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Philosophy, Politics and Economics and a Master’s Degree in Comparative Social Policy, both from the University of Oxford. There, his research interests included international education performance and labour market intervention.
In his time at Faculty, David has managed projects that built and deployed machine learning tools across Law Enforcement, Health and Care, and Maritime Security.
Dr Setrak Balian
Technical Lead, Government
Setrak has over four years of experience as a data scientist and specialises in using machine learning for digital content moderation. Prior to joining Faculty, Setrak held a postdoctoral position in quantum computing at UC San Diego. He has a PhD in Theoretical Physics from UCL.
