Hospital admissions for the elderly have been halved through an app for carers that spots when people are falling ill at home and need medical attention.

The technology, developed by Cera, a care provider, and Faculty, an AI firm, is being used by care workers carrying out home visits to more than 50,000 patients a day in the UK.

Social care staff use the smartphone app to log key observations on every visit, such as a patient’s blood pressure, temperature, age, heart rate and what they have eaten.

The software analyses this information, taking into account age and medical history, to detect any emerging signs of illnesses such as the flu or a urine infection that might be missed. Research shows the artificial intelligence app
